What is Furosemide?
- Furosemide is a type of medication known as a loop diuretic.
- It helps the body remove excess fluid.
- It is commonly prescribed for high blood pressure and fluid retention.
- Some people may feel dizzy or nauseous when taking furosemide, but these effects are usually mild and temporary.
- Always read the patient leaflet for a complete list of possible side effects and precautions.
How Does Furosemide Work?
Excess fluid in the body can lead to swelling in the legs or lungs, causing swollen feet, breathlessness and fatigue. It can also raise blood pressure to an unhealthy level.
Furosemide is a loop diuretic that helps the body remove extra fluid through the kidneys into the urine. This process, called diuresis, helps to lower blood pressure and reduce swelling or fluid retention. Because of these effects, furosemide is often prescribed for high blood pressure (hypertension) and oedema (fluid retention).
In some cases, furosemide is given alongside other medications to treat conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, or liver disease.
How is Furosemide Taken?
Furosemide Tablets
Furosemide comes in tablet form and should be swallowed with water. It is usually taken in the morning to prevent frequent urination at night.
It can be taken with or without food.
What is the proper dosage of Furosemide?
Furosemide 20mg / Furosemide 40mg
Furosemide is available in 20mg and 40mg tablets.
A typical starting dose for swelling (oedema) is 40mg once a day, but this may be adjusted depending on your response to treatment.
For high blood pressure (hypertension), the usual dose is 20mg to 40mg once or twice daily. If taking two doses a day, the second dose is usually taken in the early afternoon to avoid waking up at night to pass urine.
Elderly patients and those with liver disease may start with a lower dose.
