Premature Ejaculation Treatment

Premature Ejaculation Treatment

Premature ejaculation happens when a man reaches orgasm and ejaculates too quickly during sex, often with very little stimulation. There is no set time that defines "too soon" — it depends on what feels right for the man and his partner. However, when it happens regularly, it can cause frustration and make sex feel less enjoyable for both people.

At PharmXtra, we offer a range of safe and clinically approved treatments designed to help manage premature ejaculation. All treatments are delivered discreetly and are subject to an online consultation with a registered independent prescriber, who will assess if they are suitable for you.

What is Premature Ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation (PE) is when a man reaches orgasm and ejaculates too quickly during sex, often with little stimulation. There is no set time that defines it. What feels “too soon” is different for each couple, so the focus is usually on whether it causes frustration or affects the couple’s satisfaction.

Some men may ejaculate in just a minute or two and not be concerned, while others lasting longer may still feel unhappy. Because of this, doctors often look at the emotional and psychological impact, rather than just the timing.

What Causes Premature Ejaculation?

PE is a common issue and affects many men at some point in their lives. It can be grouped into two types:

Lifelong Premature Ejaculation

This is when the condition has existed since a man's first sexual experiences. It is usually linked to psychological factors such as:

  • Sexual trauma during youth

  • Cultural or religious guilt about sex

  • Learning early to ejaculate quickly due to fear of being caught

Acquired Premature Ejaculation

This is when the problem starts later in life. It may be caused by:

  • Medical conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, or nerve damage (e.g. from multiple sclerosis)

  • Mental health issues including stress, anxiety, or depression

  • Relationship difficulties or emotional conflicts

In many cases, PE is linked to nervousness, overexcitement, or performance anxiety, especially in younger men or those in new relationships.

How Can I Treat Premature Ejaculation?

The good news is that PE can often be treated easily and effectively, with both medication and lifestyle support.

Oral Treatment

Priligy (also known as dapoxetine) is a tablet that increases levels of serotonin in the brain. This helps delay ejaculation and is proven to be effective for many men.

Topical Treatment

A local anaesthetic such as EMLA cream can be applied to the penis before sex to reduce sensitivity. After applying and wiping it off, it can help men last longer during intercourse. Using condoms can also reduce sensation, but EMLA is usually more effective.

Psychological Support

For men with lifelong PE, therapy, counselling, or behavioural techniques may be useful alongside medication. Identifying whether your condition is lifelong or acquired can help tailor the most effective treatment plan.
