Naproxen - Key Information

  • Naproxen is a medication used to relieve pain and inflammation.
  • It works in a similar way to ibuprofen.
  • It can help manage conditions such as arthritis, back pain, and gout.
  • Naproxen is also effective for treating painful periods.
  • It may not be suitable for people with stomach ulcers or asthma.
  • Always read the patient information leaflet for a complete list of side effects and precautions.

When you experience an injury or inflammation, such as arthritis or gout, your body produces chemicals called prostaglandins. Naproxen works by blocking these chemicals, helping to reduce pain, swelling, and redness.

Like other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, naproxen reduces inflammation. However, it may remain active in the body for longer, meaning it often needs to be taken less frequently than other pain relief medications.

What experiences have Naproxen users had?

Everyone’s experience with naproxen will be different. You can read reviews from other users on platforms such as Web MD and Drugs.com. However, you should always speak to a doctor before starting any new medication to ensure it is safe and suitable for you.

Usage Advice

Naproxen Tablets

Naproxen comes in both regular and effervescent tablets. The effervescent version dissolves in water, which may be easier to take if you struggle with swallowing tablets.

Regular tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water.

Both types of tablets should be taken with food or just after eating to reduce the risk of an upset stomach.

Dosage

Naproxen 500mg / 250mg

The correct dosage of naproxen depends on what it is being used for:

  • Arthritis: 500mg to 1,000mg per day, taken in one or two doses.
  • Muscular or period pain: A starting dose of 500mg, followed by 250mg every 6 to 8 hours if needed.
  • Gout: A first dose of 750mg, followed by 250mg every 8 hours until symptoms improve.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, naproxen can cause side effects. The most common ones usually improve after a few doses, but if they continue or cause concern, seek medical advice.

Common side effects include:

  • Confusion and dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Changes to your hearing (including ringing in the ears) or changes to your vision
  • Feeling tired or sleepy
  • Skin rashes.

Serious side effects (seek medical help if you experience any of the following):

  • Severe indigestion, heartburn or stomach pain with or without diarrhoea and vomiting. This could be a sign of stomach inflammation or an ulcer.
  • Vomiting blood or black specks that look like coffee grounds – this could be due to bleeding from the stomach
  • Black stools (poo) or blood in your stools – this could be due to bleeding in the stomach or intestine
  • Chest pain or breathlessness – this could be due to blood loss
  • Frequent sore throat, nose bleeds or infections
  • High temperature, feeling sick, headache, neck stiffness or pain looking at lights – this could be due to meningitis occurring without an infection
  • Blood in your urine (pee), or passing reduced amounts of urine
  • Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes
  • A slow or irregular heartbeat
  • Fever, stomach pain, and vomiting could be caused by problems with the pancreas.

If you experience a severe allergic reaction (such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue), call 999 immediately.
