Naproxen - Key Information
What is Naproxen?
- Naproxen is a medication used to relieve pain and inflammation.
- It works in a similar way to ibuprofen.
- It can help manage conditions such as arthritis, back pain, and gout.
- Naproxen is also effective for treating painful periods.
- It may not be suitable for people with stomach ulcers or asthma.
- Always read the patient information leaflet for a complete list of side effects and precautions.
How Does Naproxen Work?
When you experience an injury or inflammation, such as arthritis or gout, your body produces chemicals called prostaglandins. Naproxen works by blocking these chemicals, helping to reduce pain, swelling, and redness.
Like other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, naproxen reduces inflammation. However, it may remain active in the body for longer, meaning it often needs to be taken less frequently than other pain relief medications.

Usage Advice

Naproxen comes in both regular and effervescent tablets. The effervescent version dissolves in water, which may be easier to take if you struggle with swallowing tablets.
Regular tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water.
Both types of tablets should be taken with food or just after eating to reduce the risk of an upset stomach.
