How Does Nitrofurantoin MR Work?
Nitrofurantoin MR is an antibiotic that kills bacteria, preventing the infection from worsening.
After being absorbed by the digestive system, nitrofurantoin is filtered into the urine. This allows the antibiotic to target the infection directly, making it an effective treatment for most urinary tract infections but not for other types of infections.
Nitrofurantoin MR is a modified-release (MR) preparation. This means the medication is released slowly into the body, providing longer-lasting effects. As a result, the capsules need to be taken less frequently than standard-release antibiotics.
How is Nitrofurantoin MR Taken?
Nitrofurantoin MR comes in capsule form. For best results, swallow each capsule whole with a glass of water.
Doses should be taken 12 hours apart at the same time each day.
Dosage of Nitrofurantoin MR
While standard-release nitrofurantoin may need to be taken three or four times daily, the modified-release version requires fewer doses.
For women, the usual dose is 100mg twice daily for 3 days.
Men and pregnant women may be prescribed 100mg twice daily for 7 days.
