Alternative Contraceptives

Alternative Contraceptives

While the pill is a common choice for contraception, it’s not the only option. If you struggle to take a tablet every day or your current method doesn’t suit you, there are alternative hormonal contraceptives that may be a better fit.

Options such as the patch and the vaginal ring contain the same hormones (oestrogen and progestogen) as the pill, but they work differently and don’t require daily use.

What Are Alternative Contraceptives?

Alternative contraceptives are options other than the standard contraceptive pill. These include the vaginal ring (NuvaRing) and the contraceptive patch (Evra Patch). Both methods contain oestrogen and progestogen—the same hormones found in the combined pill.

These hormones help prevent pregnancy by:

  • Stopping ovulation (no egg is released)

  • Thickening cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach the egg

  • Thinning the womb lining, so a fertilised egg can’t implant

Used correctly, both methods are up to 99% effective.

How Do You Use Them?

The Vaginal Ring

  • Gently squeeze the ring and insert it into the vagina, like a tampon

  • Leave it in place for 21 days, then remove it for a 7-day break

  • During the break, you'll usually have a period

  • Insert a new ring after the break to continue protection

The Contraceptive Patch

  • Stick the patch to clean, dry skin (e.g. your stomach, back, arm, or buttocks)

  • Wear each patch for 7 days, changing it once a week for 3 weeks

  • On the fourth week, go patch-free for 7 days, then start again

Why Choose These Options?

These alternatives are ideal for women who:

  • Don’t want to take a pill every day

  • Prefer a low-maintenance method

  • Want reliable pregnancy prevention without daily reminders

Both options are easy to use, highly effective, and available to order safely from PharmXtra after a quick online consultation with a qualified prescriber.
