Morning After Pill

The morning after pill is a type of emergency contraception used to help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or when regular contraception has failed, such as a missed pill or broken condom.

It works best when taken as soon as possible, but it can still be effective up to 5 days after sex, depending on the type of pill.

At PharmXtra, we offer a trusted range of morning after pills, available with fast, discreet delivery to give you the best chance of preventing pregnancy when timing matters most. All treatments require a short online consultation with a qualified prescriber.

What Is the Morning After Pill?

The morning after pill is a type of emergency contraception taken after unprotected sex or if your usual contraceptive method has failed, such as a broken condom or a missed pill. It helps prevent pregnancy and should be used as soon as possible after the event. Despite the name, it can still work for up to five days afterwards, depending on the type used.

How Does It Work?

The morning after pill contains a hormone called levonorgestrel or ulipristal acetate, which works by:

  • Delaying ovulation so no egg is released

  • Preventing fertilised eggs from implanting in the womb lining (if ovulation has already occurred)

It does not end a pregnancy, so it is not the same as the abortion pill. If you are already pregnant, the morning after pill will not work, and you should speak to a doctor about your options.

This emergency option should not be used regularly. If you find yourself needing it often, consider switching to a regular method of contraception such as the combined pill, mini pill, or other long-term options available from PharmXtra.

Benefits of the Morning After Pill

  • Quick and easy to use – just one tablet taken orally

  • Highly effective – up to 95–98% success rate if taken promptly

  • Prevents unwanted pregnancy, which may help avoid the need for an abortion

  • Safe and convenient access through PharmXtra’s online consultation and next-day delivery
