  • Betnovate Cream contains 0.1% betamethasone valerate, a type of steroid.
  • Betamethasone helps to soothe itchy, dry, red, or swollen skin.
  • It is commonly prescribed for inflammatory skin conditions, including eczema.
  • Only a small amount of cream is needed for effective treatment.
  • Using too much can increase the risk of side effects.
  • Always read the patient leaflet for a complete list of side effects and precautions.

Betnovate Cream contains the potent steroid betamethasone valerate, often prescribed when milder steroid creams, like hydrocortisone, are ineffective.

It works by activating natural substances in the skin that help reduce swelling, itching, and redness caused by inflammation.

Betnovate is used to treat a variety of inflammatory skin conditions, such as:

  • Eczema
  • Dermatitis (skin inflammation from various causes)
  • Dermatitis caused by an allergy
  • Psoriasis
  • Lichen simplex and lichen planus
  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Lupus erythematosus
  • Reactions to insect bites

Betnovate cream should only be applied to the affected area of the skin. Due to its strength, only a small amount is needed. Follow your specific instructions, as you may be advised to apply it once or more daily.

Steroid creams are often measured in ‘fingertip units’. A fingertip unit is the amount of cream that can be squeezed onto the tip of one finger. One fingertip unit is sufficient to cover an area twice the size of your palm, so for a small area of inflammation, only a small amount of cream is needed.

Wash your hands before applying, and then apply a thin layer of cream to the affected area. Gently smooth it on, ensuring complete coverage. Wash your hands after use to avoid unnecessary exposure to the cream.

Steroid creams can be used on wet or weeping skin. Avoid applying to broken skin or cuts.

If you have very dry skin, you may be prescribed the thicker, oilier Betnovate Ointment instead. The ointment helps lock moisture into the skin to treat dryness.

Betnovate Cream is available in a 0.1% strength, meaning each gram of cream contains 1mg of betamethasone valerate.

Apply sparingly to the affected area and follow the specified treatment duration.

Like all medications, Betnovate Cream may cause side effects, though these are uncommon if instructions are followed correctly. The most common side effect is a brief feeling of burning or stinging upon application, which should subside after a few days.

Prolonged use of Betnovate Cream may lead to thinning of the skin or the development of stretch marks. These stretch marks may fade over time, but they are likely to be permanent.

Serious allergic reactions are rare, but if you experience a severe allergic reaction (such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the lips or tongue), call 999 immediately.

You should stop using Betnovate if:

  • You notice light or dark skin patches.
  • You begin feeling unwell with symptoms such as vomiting, dizziness, weakness, tiredness, mood changes, loss of appetite, or diarrhoea, as these may indicate adrenal gland problems.
  • You experience confusion, sleepiness, thirst, increased hunger, frequent urination, or a sweet/fruity breath, which could be signs of high blood sugar.
  • Your skin condition worsens or you notice yellow fluid weeping from the skin, indicating a possible infection.
  • You notice changes in your eyesight.

On PharmXtra you will need to complete an online consultation. This will be reviewed by a doctor who ensures that Betnovate Cream is suitable for you.

If approved, your order will be delivered to your address.
