Video: How do beta blockers work?

The British Heart Foundation explains how beta blockers work in the video below:

Propranolol is a type of beta blocker. It works by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors in the heart, slowing the heart rate and reducing its force. This helps lower blood pressure, making it a common treatment for hypertension.

Propranolol can also help ease physical symptoms of anxiety, such as a racing heartbeat, palpitations, trembling and chest pain (angina).

For migraine sufferers, propranolol may help by stabilising blood vessels in the brain, reducing the frequency and intensity of migraines.

Each person taking Propranolol for anxiety, heart conditions, or migraines has a unique experience.

Usage Advice

Propranolol Tablets

Propranolol is a prescription medication available in tablet form. It should be taken at the same time each day, with or without food. Tablets should be swallowed with water and split in half if needed. Oral solutions are also available.

Propranolol is available as a standard release tablet, liquid or a sustained release preparation.

Sustained-release capsules release the medicine gradually over 24 hours and are taken once daily. These must be swallowed whole.

Dosage

Propranolol 10mg / Propranolol 40mg

Propranolol comes in 10mg, 40mg, 80mg and 160mg tablets. The 80mg and 160mg doses are available as sustained-release preparations.

For high blood pressure the starting dose is 80mg twice a day, which may be increased to 160mg if needed.

For migraine prevention, the usual starting dose is 40mg taken two or three times a day.

For situational anxiety, the recommended starting dose is 40mg once a day, increasing to 40mg three times a day if necessary.

Side Effects

Propranolol is widely prescribed, but some people may experience side effects. The most common side effects include:

  • Tiredness
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Cold fingers and toes
