The British Heart Foundation explains how beta blockers work in the video below:
How Does Propranolol Work?
Propranolol is a type of beta blocker. It works by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors in the heart, slowing the heart rate and reducing its force. This helps lower blood pressure, making it a common treatment for hypertension.
Propranolol can also help ease physical symptoms of anxiety, such as a racing heartbeat, palpitations, trembling and chest pain (angina).
For migraine sufferers, propranolol may help by stabilising blood vessels in the brain, reducing the frequency and intensity of migraines.
